Skinmalism: Simplified Beauty Regimens

Skinmalism, a conflation of the words “skin” and “minimalism”, is a term that gained popularity all over social media platforms and majorly TikTok back in 2021. Following the emergence and apogee of the 10-step Korean skincare regimen in the beauty industry over the last decade, skinmalism is driven by a desire by consumers to pare things back. Often overwhelmed by the multitude of products and increasingly complex routines, the beauty shopper is now stepping away from mass consumerism, and being more discerning in their purchases. The focus for skinmalists is on paying attention to what products we are using, and making sure our skin is getting exactly what it needs to glow. Ultimately, the goal is finding a skincare approach that aligns with individual needs and preferences.

What does a minimalist skincare routine look like?

The guiding principle for skinmalistic routine is quality over quantity. The aim is to do more with less.

● Cleansing
The first step in any and every skincare routine. This step helps in getting rid of dirt and any accumulated debris and unclogs skin’s pores. The idea is to cleanse your face twice a day; in your AM and PM routines use a quality, non-stripping cleanser that caters to your skin’s needs. For acne-prone skin for example, you may consider a cleanser that incorporates salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. While for dry skin, you may consider a cream cleanser with ingredients like colloidal oatmeal and glycerin to sooth and hydrate.

● Serums
While serums aren’t a mandatory step in a skincare routine, they can be very beneficial if you wish to target specific skin concerns e.g. hydration, acne, hyperpigmentation among others. The temptation is to buy one serum for each need, but to keep it simple, look for multi-tasking serums that include a mix of active ingredients that target multiple concerns, so that you have less on your shelf.

● Moisturiser
Maintaining the health of your skin’s barrier is crucial for glowing, healthy skin, and moisturiser has a Hyaluronic Acid for hydration, or Vitamin C for antioxidant protection.

● Sunscreen
The final (and we’d argue – most important!) step in your skincare routine is sunscreen. Protection from the sun’s harsh UVA/UVB rays not only prevents diseases like skin cancer, but also slows signs of premature ageing and uneven skin tone, as well as helps get rid of hyperpigmentation.

For optimum protection, we recommend an SPF 30 or more. If you want to follow a ‘less is more’ strategy, Skincademy’s multi-tasking Sunkissed SPF 50+ Sunscreen is formulated with Niacinamide, Hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E for maximum protection with added skincare benefits.
